Wellis Crystal Water Care

Wellis spas come pre-fitted with the Crystal Clean System, the WellisGuard™ sanitiser device, and antimicrobial cartridge filters. Your job is to top up the sanitiser, balance pH, and clean the filter on a routine.

Wellis spas come pre-fitted with the Crystal Clean System, the WellisGuard™ sanitiser device, and antimicrobial cartridge filters — together they do most of the heavy lifting. Your job is to top up the sanitiser, balance pH, and clean the filter on a routine. Below is the complete Wellis Crystal range, the recommended weekly / monthly / quarterly schedule, and the dosing reference for every product. Always follow the dosing card on each bottle and the manual that came with your spa.

How Wellis Spas Stay Clean — Built-In Systems

Every Wellis spa runs a multi-stage filtration and sanitation cycle automatically:

  • Antimicrobial cartridge filter — traps fine particles and inhibits bacterial growth on the filter media itself.
  • Eco-circulation pump — the low-energy W-EC pump cycles your water through the filter and heater 24/7.
  • WellisGuard™ sanitiser — a built-in sanitation device that works with chlorine to keep the water 20% fresher than chlorine alone, while reducing the chlorine dose you need.
  • Crystal Clean System — a 48mm circulation jet with three zones that lifts settled debris into the filter. Premium-Plus models add the WIS Pro intelligent water analyser for 24/7 smartphone monitoring.

Together these systems mean you only need to manage three things manually: sanitiser level, pH balance, and filter cleanliness. The Wellis Crystal range covers all three, plus extras for clarity, foam, and metal-rich fill water.

Essentials You'll Need — The Wellis Crystal Range

The Wellis Crystal range is engineered specifically for Wellis spa materials and the WellisGuard™ system. It works with most modern third-party spas as well — universal pH, alkalinity, and sanitiser chemistry. Below is what every spa owner should keep on hand:

The 5 must-haves

Helpful add-ons

  • Crystal Bright & Clear — flocculant that clumps fine particles for the filter to catch. Use weekly or when water is hazy.
  • Crystal Foam Down — anti-foam additive (no oil base). Use only when foam appears.
  • Crystal Metal Clear — sequestrant for iron/copper/minerals after a fresh fill if your tap water is hard.
  • Crystal Spa Cleaner — pipe and system cleaner used during quarterly water changes.

Weekly Water Care Routine

The simplest reliable schedule for a privately-used Wellis spa:

Every day

  • Check the cover is on properly when not in use.
  • Note water temperature; the WellisGuard system runs automatically.

2–3× per week — Test and balance

  1. Dip a Crystal Pool Check 5-in-1 strip for 1 second, hold horizontally for 15 seconds, compare to the chart.
  2. Target ranges:
    • Free chlorine: 1–3 ppm (or bromine 3–5 ppm)
    • pH: 7.2–7.8
    • Total alkalinity: 80–150 ppm
  3. If pH is high, add Crystal pH Down per the dosing card with circulation running. Wait 2 hours, retest.
  4. If alkalinity is below 80 ppm, add Crystal Alkalinity Balancer first, then re-balance pH.
  5. Top up chlorine tablets in the floating dispenser as needed.

Once a week — Filter and clarity

  1. Remove the cartridge filter and rinse with the manual filter cleaner or hose attachment.
  2. Add Crystal Bright & Clear per the dosing card with the circulation pump on, to keep water sparkling.

Once a month — Filter deep-clean

  1. Soak the cartridge overnight in Crystal Filter Cleaner solution.
  2. Rinse thoroughly, dry, and reinstall.
  3. Replace the cartridge every 12–18 months.

Filter Care

Your Wellis cartridge filter does more work than any other component in the spa. Treat it well:

  • Weekly: remove and rinse with a hose to dislodge debris. The Wellis filter cleaning device or the manual filter cleaner makes this fast.
  • Monthly: overnight soak in Crystal Filter Cleaner solution to dissolve oils, lotions, and lime scale.
  • Annually (every 12–18 months): replace the cartridge entirely.

Tip: keep two cartridges in rotation — one in the spa, one drying after cleaning. This means you never run with a damp filter.

Refreshing the Water — Quarterly Drain & Refill

Even with the best chemistry, water gradually accumulates dissolved solids that can't be filtered out. Wellis recommends a complete water change every 3–4 months for private use, more frequently for heavy or commercial use.

The Wellis quarterly procedure

  1. Pre-clean the pipes — add Crystal Spa Cleaner per the bottle instructions, run all jets for 15 minutes, then drain. This removes biofilm from the plumbing that fresh water alone won't reach.
  2. Drain — use the 2" fast-drain valve (most Wellis models drain in ~10 minutes).
  3. Wipe down — soft cloth with mild soap on the acrylic surface. Avoid abrasives.
  4. Refill — connect a Pure Fill Active Charcoal Prefilter (and Pure Stream Water Softener if your area has hard water) to your hose for chemical-free, scale-free fill water.
  5. First-fill chemistry — add Crystal Metal Clear if your water has visible iron or copper, then balance alkalinity, then pH, then sanitise. Test before bathing.

Quick Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
Cloudy water Body oils, low sanitiser, or fine particles Shock with extra chlorine; add Crystal Bright & Clear; clean the filter
Foam on the surface Soap, lotion, or detergent residue Add Crystal Foam Down. Long-term: shower before entering, rinse swimsuits before reuse
Green tint Algae or copper from heater Shock with chlorine; if persistent, add Crystal Metal Clear
Brown / yellow tint Iron or manganese from fill water Add Crystal Metal Clear; next refill, use the Pure Stream water softener
Strong chlorine smell Counter-intuitively, low free chlorine — combined chloramines build up Shock the spa with extra chlorine to break down chloramines
Itchy skin / eye irritation pH out of range (usually too high) Test pH; add Crystal pH Down to reach 7.2–7.8
Scale on heater / surface Hard fill water, high pH/alkalinity Use Pure Stream water softener at next fill; lower pH below 7.6 with Crystal pH Down
